NASCAR Driver Finishes 25th in Second Richmond International Raceway Appearance
RICHMOND, Va. (Sept. 10, 2016) – Ray Black Jr., driver of the No. 07 ScubaLife Chevrolet Camaro in the NASCAR XFINITY Series (NXS), earned his fourth consecutive Top-25 with a 25th place finish in Friday night’s Virginia529 College Savings 250 at Richmond International Raceway.
Black and his SS Green Light Racing team prepared for Friday’s night race with an extended practice session early Friday morning. The team made a series of adjustments during the session to help Black feel comfortable with the car and the track in just his second appearance at Richmond International Raceway.
Black and his team made a second run late in the first round of knock-out qualifying but would start Friday night’s race in the 29th position, narrowly missing the cut off to advance to the second round.
The race started with a long green flag run and Black got caught a lap down early on in the 250 lap race due to blistering pace set by the race leader. During the first caution period, Black and his team gambled and made the call to take the wave around and not pit in order to earn their lap back. The long green flag run that followed forced Black to pit for fuel before the rest of the field.
The remainder of the field cycled through green flag pit stops before the second caution of the night flew, helping Black and his No. 07 team immensely. After pitting for the final time under caution, Black battled for position for the remainder of the race while running some of his best lap times of the night, and would bring the ScubaLife Chevrolet home in the 25th position.
“It was a great night for our team, they worked hard all day and the gamble we made early on in the race ended up working out for us,” said Black. “It was hot tonight and those long green flag runs really took a toll but I’m glad we brought it home for our fourth-straight Top 25 finish.”
Next up for Black and his team will be the Drive for Safety 300 at Chicagoland Speedway on NBC on Saturday, September 17 at 3:30pm ET.
